THE MOREHEAD SCHOLARSHIP FIELD OF STUDY

HOST NATIONALITY

In the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a merit scholarship program called the Morehead-Cain Scholarship was first created in the United States. In honor of its founders, John Motley Morehead III, and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation, the scholarship is known as the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

 

ELIGIBLE NATIONALITY

All citizens of the United States of America, as well as students from other countries, are eligible for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

ELIGIBLE COURSES OF STUDY

All undergraduate programs offered at Morehead State University are eligible for the Morehead Scholarship.

 

ELIGIBLE REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/requirements:

  • Have a minimum Admission Index score of 450; and a minimum composite ACT score of 20 or SAT combined score of 1020 or higher.
  • Must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher for the renewal of the scholarships.
  • High school seniors demonstrating exceptional impact and academic achievement from North Carolina and from select schools across the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and various other countries are eligible for the prestigious scholarship. 

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The Morehead Scholarship eligibility and selection requirements are extremely rigorous.

Yearly, only three percent of each year’s nominees are selected as Morehead-Cain Scholars. 

To be eligible for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, you must be:

  • a competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • on track to graduate in the spring

Applicants will be selected based on:

  • Leadership
  • Physical vigor
  • Scholarship

 

SELECTION PROCESS

The Morehead Scholarship eligibility requirements are the same for all students applying for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

There are five different ways to enter the selection process:

  • For North Carolina: 

Be nominated by your high school (All N.C. high schools are eligible)

Apply directly for the scholarship

 

  • For Canada: 

Be nominated by an eligible school

Apply directly if you don’t attend an eligible school

 

  • For Great Britain

Be nominated by an eligible school

Apply directly if you don’t attend an eligible school

 

  • For Out-of-state or International

Be nominated by your high school (only eligible schools can nominate)

Be nominated by an eligible affiliate program

 

  • Apply directly as a self-nominee if you are a resident of North Carolina who attends an out-of-state school

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Morehead Scholarship students are required to present the following supporting  documents to the university:

  • High school transcript showing proof of graduation
  • Original, official financial documents
  • Picture page of passport and visa and I-20
  • Minimum GPA of 2.00 in high school for undergraduate admission, SAT or ACT scores are optional.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores on the following English language proficiency tests:

    • TOEFL 61
    • Michigan Test 82
